To achieve great things you need a plan and not quite enough time.
– Leonard Bernstein
We often grossly overestimate what our ‘future selves’ will do. Knowing this, I found a way to set goals that has been substantially more effective.
Instead mapping out the entire process, I have an overall vision but limit my focus to what needs completed in the next month only.
Yes I have a long term vision, but all that really matters right now is what’s next?
WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN THE REAL WORLD
Running a marathon vs. a mile.
Long term planning: Run a marathon.
30 day planning: Breakup with Netflix and wheeze your way through the first mile.
Which one makes you feel like you want to decorate the pavement with your lunch and which one feels like a challenge but achievable?
At the end of 30 days reevaluate where you are. Adjust for the progress that occurred over that last month, and then get crackin’ on the next 30 days again.
This method of goal setting works because you set goals that you have to get started on immediately and the next steps are clear. You don’t feel quite so overwhelmed and it’s obvious where to start.
I like to make a game out of it and challenge myself to see how much I can accomplish within a short time frame.
Don’t overwhelm yourself. Set a few specific, measurable goals and get started.
Monthly goal setting will get you started and keep you accountable.
Running a mile doesn’t get you to the finish line but if you don’t get started you’ll never cross it.
At the end of the day you’ll still be lapping everyone still sitting on the couch.
Goals don’t have to be complex with ordered lists and vision boards. Don’t mistake planning for progress.
Busy does not equal productive. Get ahead in the time that other people waste.
